2021 Tesla Model 3: E3 – Sandy Learns How to Close Frunk / Ride & Drive
In episode 3 of Munro’s analysis of the new Tesla Model 3, Sandy examines the “Frunk” as well as gives some preliminary perspective on the ride and drive experience.
So… you have the frunk vs. Sandy for a good couple of minutes without any satisfactory resolution. This is one aspect of the Tesla 3 that Sandy absolutely hates. It doesn’t lock closed consistently and this is purely an engineering flaw and not a manufacturing error, which are the kinds of failures that Sandy absolutely detests the most. Problems like this shouldn’t exist because they should be eliminated in the design or redesign phase. Although having the frunk is a great idea and use of space, not having a consistently locking cover is not only annoying but will maybe also lead to some weather damaging the items you place in that compartment.
Moving on though, once Sandy begins to drive the car, he is happy with the experience. Even on a usually rough road, such as the industrial road that Munro & Associates is located on, the car gives a very comfortable experience. Sandy goes on to remark about wind noise and the upgrade in the windows. Sandy goes on to remark the smoothness of acceleration and the overall feel that reminds him of a racecar/luxury car.

2021 Tesla Model 3: E2 – Hoist Review & Some Cost Savings
In the second episode of Munro’s new analysis of the Tesla Model 3, Sandy walks us through a hoist review of the vehicle.
First, Sandy addresses a somewhat hidden front access cover under the car that (we think) might be for the euro towing package because you can access the internal front bumper from there. Why this would appear on a US model, however, is puzzling to Sandy as this would add cost to the vehicle. That being said, Sandy is very impressed with the snap fits that he finds. The precision of the snap fits is excellent, leading Sandy to further ponder why the rest of the fit and finish gaps exist on the doors and rear trunk/lights talked about in the last episode.
Next Sandy addresses some of the conspiracies, or at the very least, accusatory comments that we have been getting regarding missing nuts on the upper and lower control arms and the like. Sandy, however, doesn’t find anything out of sorts on the car like this and, to the contrary, praises Tesla’s suspension.
He goes on to reveal some parts that Tesla has decided to eliminate which, as the man who invented the Lean Design® methodology, Sandy is all too happy to find – discussing the cost savings of these design changes. While we haven’t started tearing it apart just yet, in this video Sandy gives his first impressions on the vehicle. Unfortunately, Sandy’s first finding regarding the fit and finish is still, well… unfavorable. Uneven gaps still abound on the outside, but Sandy is impressed with the paint job and the interiors.
Sandy goes on to talk about where we will go with the car from here. But spoiler alert, Sandy is planning to take it on a road trip first before the teardown, so stay tuned to watch how this all progresses.

Sandy sits down for a video conference meeting with the creators and Co-CEO’s of Aptera, Chris Anthony and Steve Fambro.
Sandy starts off by complimenting the founders on the esthetics of this new generation of vehicle design. From there Sandy quickly gets into the meat of this vehicle including discussions on it’s solar charging capabilities including different climates/latitudes, the ability to charge the vehicle using just a regular 110V plug, performance, aerodynamics, skin cooling, and other cool tech, as well as there new manufacturing center upgrade and how to get involved with crowdfunding the car including discounts and incentives.

Industry Week 7 Developments Shaping Automotive in 2021
Sandy Munro get featured in the Industry Week article “Back to the Future: 7 Developments Shaping Automotive in 2021 and Beyond” by Laura Putre. On page three of this seven slide article entitled, “Battery Battles Heating Up”, we see the familiar picture of Sandy Munro working on and explaining his mock up of the battery bay system using example replica’s of the new Tesla 4680 batteries.
The article goes on to explain why everyone is watching Tesla’s developments with both awe and fear and why Sandy thinks that the legacy automakers are going to have a hard time catching up. It’s a great article for some sobering statistics on Tesla’s new batteries as well as where the legacy automakers stand.
In this previously unreleased video, Sandy tells a few stories about Dr. Edward Deming that from personally working with him in the past. From funny to serious, this episode shares some insights and anecdotes that you will not find in any book or other interview.
The greatest take away from this video is how much Dr. Deming cared about the people on the factory floor and how much he detested when arrogance and greed creep in from management.
A few stories to warm the heart and lessons that stand to this day.
Munro’s Follow-up Episode On The 4680 Battery Pack
In this episode, Sandy follows up from his last video we did on the 4680 Battery Pack where he addresses several of the comments we got about the original video. Some interesting points go into more detail about how the system is cooled using the Octovalve and why those choices were made as well as Tesla incredible ability to make quick and smart design changes.
