Welcome to episode 15 of Munro’s Tesla Model Y Performance teardown, where Munro & Associates CEO Sandy Munro walks us through what a tailor welded blank is, why it’s useful, where it’s used on the Model Y and where it wasn’t used on the Model 3. After the welding comparison, Sandy shares that he views the Model Y as a “pretty good build,” which is high praise considering the number of teardowns he has analyzed.

In this segment, Sandy also analyzes the construction of the body side inner (BSI) ring, as well as offers a comparison between the door flange welds on the Model 3 vs. the Model Y. You can see the full details of Sandy’s comment here.

Munro & Associates to Host Aluminum Design & Lightweighting Solutions Workshop

On March 18 – 19, Munro & Associates will host the Aluminum Association’s Transportation Group’s spring 2020 Aluminum Design & Lightweighting Solutions Workshop. The event will teach automotive engineers developments, advancements and best practices in aluminum technology by experts from leading producer companies, including Constellium, Rio Tinto, Arconic, Hydro and Novelis.

The two-day event will take place Wednesday, March 18 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday, March 19 at 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Munro & Associates, located at Centre Rd in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Munro & Associates Discuss Elon Musk’s Big Advantage

It’s commonly agreed that Tesla’s batteries hold a solid lead in range. Repeatedly, Tesla’s vehicles have proven to offer superior range over its rivals.

So how does Elon Musk achieve this big advantage?

According to Munro & Associates CEO Sandy Munro and Senior Lead Design Consultant Mark Ellis, it “has a lot to do with Tesla’s all-electric platform and the company’s proprietary battery tech.” According to this Teslarati article, Tesla is only 16 years old, and thus, it only has a fraction of the experience that its rivals in the auto market have. Yet in the EV segment, Tesla is among the veterans, having worked solely on electric cars since Day One.

Further, according to Ellis, “One of Elon Musk’s big advantages is, basically, that the vehicle is designed to be an electric car. Musk designed every aspect of this car to be as efficient as possible.”

Munro & Associates Partners with Centrepolis Accelerator for Manufacturing; Celebrates Grand Opening at Lawrence Technological University

On October 4, Munro & Associates will join the Centrepolis Accelerator in celebrating the grand opening of its new manufacturing business accelerator space at Lawrence Technological University. The new Centrepolis Accelerator facility is a 6,300 square-foot, state-of-the-art business assistance center for physical product developers and manufacturing companies.

Centrepolis Accelerator clients will include manufacturing startups and existing companies looking to move up to the next level in product innovation. Services will include access to office space, co-working space, workshops, mentors, business planning services, and laboratories and equipment for digital product design and prototyping, as well as virtual reality and mixed reality labs.

Munro is offering Centrepolis Accelerator clients its Design Profit software to support product design and cost planning. Munro has previously provided formal Lean Product Design Assessments to Centrepolis Accelerator clients, which has reduced the complexity of products, reduced part count, and improved design for manufacturability and total product cost before going to market.

The Centrepolis Accelerator and Munro have also previously partnered on a series of events at Munro’s facility called “Leaning Your Product Design,” which has attracted many physical product developers and improved their product designs as a result.

Munro’s Cory Steuben Shares Secrets of Tesla and Other Leading EVs at The Battery Show

Presenting to a standing room only crowd, Munro & Associates’ Cory Steuben, account director, offered automotive engineers objective technical information about today’s leading EVs during two sessions at The Battery Show North America recently held in Novi, Mich.

During two presentations, Steuben compared EV systems integrations across car companies/vehicles and demonstrated why a vertically integrated company, such as Tesla, is leading the way and why the domestics must rethink their designs if they want to catch up.

Steuben first presented “Tesla Model 3 vs. Jaguar I-PACE Motor Insights” where he showcased two disassembled electric motors: one Tesla Model 3 internal permanent magnet (IPM); and one Jaguar I-PACE IPM.

“When it comes to motors, we see many different attempts across many manufacturers—particularly with the geometry of how they put the magnets into their internal permanent magnet motors,” said Steuben. “When you look at the ideal shape is actually very expensive to manufacture—it would be three or four sets of parabolic magnets. There is no common orientation. With the Jaguar, we see three stacked magnets, all neodymium-ferrite-born magnets which is similar to others in the magnet material. Tesla does a simple single V. We have seen six or seven variations in various forms.”

Steuben also presented “Electric Vehicle System-Level Integration Trends & Thermal-Electrical Management Synergies,” where he provided a detailed report on the system-level integration advancements that are impacting the OEM-level development of thermal and electrical systems. He highlighted system integration trends from the past and present, with a focus on the Tesla Model 3 Superbottle and integrated system.
