Sandy Munro, the driving force behind Munro & Associates, Inc., began his career as a tool and die maker rising to chief engineer for the development of machine tools and fully automated systems. This foundational role in the manufacturing sector provided him with a practical understanding of production challenges and efficiencies and set the stage for his future work in the automotive industry.
Sandy continued his innovation practice at Ford, where he played a pivotal role in implementing Design for Assembly (DFA) principles and eventually developing the original Design for Manufacturing (DFM) methodology. His leadership in resolving assembly issues during the conceptual phase helped decrease operational costs and make the entire operation more efficient.
After shifting into a finance role, Sandy gained further insight into how design impacts manufacturing quality and cost. This experience was crucial in allowing him (and future Munro employees) to see the subtle but profound implications that every aspect of manufacturing has on overall profit.
Influenced by the mentorship of Dr. Edward Demming, Sandy began developing the principles of what would become the Lean Design® methodology and the systemization of radical efficiency & simplicity for production.
In 1989, Sandy founded Munro & Associates. This consultancy firm was built around the Lean Design® methodology and various improvement methodologies for manufacturing and production.
In the years that followed, Munro refined its approach to reducing waste and complexity, while enhancing product quality and efficiency. Munro expanded its reach globally, with offices and facilities supporting industries including aerospace, defense, automotive, marine, consumer electronics, and more. Numerous companies found themselves saving significant resources in cost and time while improving their quality.
Munro became particularly well known for its detailed teardown analyses of vehicles, which was pivotal in developing EV technology. This led to influential reports on vehicles like the BMWi3 in 2014 and the Tesla Model 3 in 2018, which brought the company’s profile to the public eye, and compelled Elon Musk himself to praise Munro’s analysis and critique of his work.
Munro also began showcasing their independent research in developing technology, so companies all over the world could benefit from their findings and methodologies.
Today, Munro is active in dozens of industries and has helped hundreds of companies increase their profitability while improving their product quality, and decreasing their production costs and complexity. Munro prides itself on making top-notch production as simple and easy as possible, even when designing and manufacturing the most intricate items.
