ModVans MH1X Tour

Inside the ModVans MH1/X: The Future of Modular High-Tech Camper Vans

As electric vehicle adoption grows, innovations are not limited to passenger cars and trucks. Companies like ModVans are redefining how we think about recreational vehicles (RVs), blending modularity, off-grid capability, and smart technology into compact, flexible camper vans. The ModVans MH1/X exemplifies this evolution. This model combines the engineering rigor of a startup with a user-first design philosophy—much like the early Tesla ethos. Featuring one of the largest batteries in any RV and a host of clever design features, the MH1/X sets a new standard for what a modular high-tech camper van can be.

A Platform Rooted in Practicality

ModVans starts with the Ford Transit cargo van chassis—specifically the high-roof version—and converts it into a fully livable, off-grid-ready motorhome. While Ford offers an all-electric Transit, ModVans has chosen not to build on it for now due to its limited 100-mile range. Instead, their current platform remains gasoline-powered, effectively serving as a hybrid in functionality: using the ICE drivetrain to reach remote destinations while leveraging a substantial onboard battery for all electric living.

Record-Setting RV Battery Tech

The MH1/X features a custom-designed 26 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack—likely the largest in any RV today. Instead of using off-the-shelf options, ModVans engineers built their own flat cell modules from the ground up. Each module fits inside a one-inch aluminum casing, layered into the floor. This approach saves interior space while delivering maximum power.

The battery powers everything from heating and cooling systems to kitchen appliances and entertainment features. This eliminates the need for propane and enables true off-grid operation for extended adventures. The design draws parallels with lean manufacturing techniques—like those seen in automotive startups—maximizing space, efficiency, and performance.

Designed by Users, for Users

Founder PJ Tezza emphasized that ModVans vehicles are shaped by real-world experience. He drives the MH1/X daily, takes it off-road on weekends, and lives in it at trade shows. This firsthand perspective directly influences design decisions.

Take the queen-size bed, for example—a rare feature in most camper vans. ModVans made it possible by bumping out the sidewalls and installing large OEM windows. This design adds space and natural light. Underneath the bed, they built a spacious garage, perfect for storing bikes, climbing gear, and other adventure equipment.

ModVans also doubled down on water capacity. With a 51-gallon tank—twice the norm for its class—the MH1/X allows longer, more comfortable trips off-grid without sacrificing hygiene or cooking functionality.

Innovation in Every Corner

The MH1/X packs smart design into every surface. A deep kitchen area benefits from the sidewall bump-outs and includes a high-end convection microwave that also functions as an oven, air fryer, toaster, and pasta heater. A key detail here is space optimization: the kitchen avoids overhead cabinets directly above the cooking area, making it easier to prepare meals without bumping into hard surfaces.

Storage throughout the cabin emphasizes soft-sided modular pouches instead of rigid cabinetry. This design reduces weight, enhances safety (especially for sleeping passengers), and offers more flexible gear storage. The “gear loops” sewn into the soft storage add to its utility for active travelers.

Lightweight Construction, Lean Philosophy

The RV industry has long struggled with excess vehicle weight, often resorting to heavy-duty chassis or dual rear wheels. ModVans takes a smarter approach. They reduce weight by choosing efficient materials and lean design. Their team cuts all cabinetry from single sheets of pre-laminated Baltic birch using CNC machines. Then, they reuse the cutouts to form internal skeletons. This method cuts waste and adds lightweight strength.

A typical cabinet weighs just 10–15 pounds, light enough to help maintain good fuel economy while remaining robust and modular. This approach channels the lean manufacturing principles Munro & Associates is known for: reduce material, maximize function.

Smart Living: The Connected Camper

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of the MH1/X is its embedded electronics ecosystem. ModVans designs its own circuit boards and cloud-connected app to control everything—from pop-tops and awnings to HVAC and lighting. The app works via Bluetooth or the internet and runs on both phones and a provided Android tablet.

This software integration not only simplifies RV operation but allows for updates and diagnostics remotely—an innovation rarely seen in the traditional RV market. Features like heated floors and climate control are just a tap away, creating a luxurious, high-tech experience on par with modern smart homes.

Modular Seating and Interior Flexibility

True to its name, ModVans embraces modularity. The MH1/X supports up to seven passengers, thanks to a modular seat and table system that bolts directly into a custom floor plate. All seats swivel, recline, and are pull-tested for safety.

Even the dining and workspace tables are modular—anchored to side pillars for improved stability and knee clearance. These details support dynamic usage scenarios, from solo travel to family outings, with maximum reconfigurability and minimum hassle.

High Function with Style

The MH1/X intentionally rejects “home-like” RV finishes in favor of automotive-inspired aesthetics. Brushed metal laminate, sculpted surfaces, and clean lines contribute to a sleek, modern interior. It’s designed to look and feel like an advanced mobility platform—not a living room on wheels.

Finishing touches like pop-up semi-dry bathrooms with retractable walls, sliding toilets, and embedded sensors to prevent mechanical errors highlight the MH1/X’s meticulous attention to detail. Everything feels deliberate, robust, and engineered.

Cost and Value

The MH1/X starts at \$130,000, with fully equipped models reaching about \$200,000. This pricing competes directly with traditional Class B RVs. Despite its advanced tech and large battery, it still qualifies as a certified RV. As a result, buyers can access 20-year loans and deduct interest like a second mortgage.

More surprisingly, insurance rates are often lower than comparable passenger or commercial vans due to RV-specific policies. This affordability equation makes the MH1/X appealing to those seeking luxury, technology, and adventure in a compact form.

Why ModVans Matters

ModVans is pushing the envelope in RV design by fusing user-driven innovation, in-house engineering, and a lean manufacturing mindset. The MH1/X doesn’t just add convenience features—it redefines how adventure vehicles are built and used. With scalable modular components, a robust battery system, and smart connectivity, ModVans delivers a next-gen travel experience that’s ready for the EV era.

For automotive engineers, lean design practitioners, and EV enthusiasts, the MH1/X offers a compelling look into the future of electric adventure mobility.
